Many important characters helped make the novel Medicine Walk an amazing story. Out of those character the story provides 3 well written main characters that the story was revolved around.
Franklin Starlight is a quiet and mature 16 year old boy who has spent his entire life in the wilderness. He was raised by a man whom he calls the old man. Frank has learned traditional survival skills, hunting, and how to live off the land. As he grew up, he became more independent and developed a respect for nature. Despite knowing some of the basics of his heritage, Frank knows little about his parents, family history, or identity.
Eldon Starlight is Frank’s biological father. He is a man who has spent much of his life fighting alcoholism while also carrying the weight of trauma and guilt. He was absent for most of Frank’s life, but now that he is dying, he seeks Frank's help before his death. He wishes to acquire a warrior's death. During this final journey, he also sets on the path towards truth, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
The Old Man, later to be known as Bunky, is a kind person who raised Frank from a young age after his parents left. He has passed down knowledge about survival, the land, and the importance of respecting nature to Frank. While he teaches Frank everything he needs to know about his heritage, he avoids conversations about Frank’s family or past. Throughout the story the Old Man is a fatherly figure to Frank who taught him many skills that will later benefit Frank’s journey with Eldon
